Second Anniversary Memorial

February 2, 2010, the Feast of the Presentation, marked the second anniversary of the deaths of OLSWA students Paul Sanders and Janine Lieu.  The Third-Year class, Paul and Janine's classmates, organized the commemoration services which included a slide show presentation, prayer service and candlelight vigil, and memorial Mass.

Classmate Cassie Farrell offers the following reflection:

In the fall of 2007, a group of young people from across Canada, the U.S.A., and England came together in Barry’s Bay, Ontario, to form the new first year class at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy. At this point in time, these young people had no idea what challenges they would face together, or the strong friendships that they would forge. They could not have imagined the type of impact they would make on each other’s lives. With each passing day, the first years only grew closer, and while there were some odd characters in the mix, each person played an integral role in the dynamic of the entire class. Paul Sanders and Janine Lieu were two of these young people.

Paul Francis Sanders was an energetic and quirky young man with an infectious laugh, and a love for duct tape. While he is remembered fondly for his bold and unusual sense of style, what was most striking about him was his genuine and inspiring love for Christ. In Paul’s case, this love spilled over into his relationships with other people, who could not help but be moved by it. His strong devotion to the protection of the unborn, and his willingness to reach out to other young people proved to be inspirational to his fellow classmates and friends. He was always ready to be involved for the greater glory of God, and was instrumental in the foundation of OLSWA’s pro-life club. He truly was a man for others, and lived his life in the light of Christ.

Janine Lieu was a beautiful young woman who knew how to love others in a profound way. She carried herself with incredible grace, and had a smile that could light up an entire room. Her love for Christ was visible in her face, and in her demeanour. She was one of the founding members of OLSWA’s pro-life club, and while she worked diligently on its development, she humbly declined any credit for it. While she might have seemed quiet to some, she knew very well how to truly be there for others. She regularly visited the sick and elderly, and her compassion and tenderness towards these vulnerable people was incredibly moving for anyone who witnessed it. Janine served as a beacon of light for everyone who had the joy of meeting her.

Two years have passed since we lost our dear friends, Paul and Janine. The tragic events of February 2nd, 2008 are still fresh in our minds and hearts, and it is not without sadness that we reflect upon them. This would have been Paul and Janine’s graduating year at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy- those young people who met that August day in 2007 are now the graduating class. As a class, we want others to know that it is possible to live in joyful hope as faithful young Catholics, for we saw it for ourselves in the examples of Paul and Janine, and we strive in our own lives to follow these examples. These two were not only our friends, but they were leaders within our class. They were real people who lived, loved, and suffered, and yet seemed to know something many of us have not figured out yet. It is for these reasons that we can smile through the tears and persevere, and thank God that we were able to have Paul and Janine in our lives. We miss them, we love them, and we look forward to meeting them again.
Paul and Janine, please pray for us and for the Academy.
