In Memoriam
In Memoriam

Although the Academy is only 10 years old, the OLSWA community has already closely experienced the mystery of life and death. Three members of our community were called home to God at a time that some might call “premature”Paul Sanders and Janine Lieu, the founders of OLSWA’s pro-life club, were first-year students when they were involved in a fatal car accident in February 2008. Shortly thereafter, Dr. David Warner, our first president, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, to which he succumbed in May 2010.

While these events left the Academy community in mourning, the remarkable faith, perseverance and witness of these three remain with us today as signs of hope. It is with this hope, and with joy and fondness that we celebrate the lives of these individuals.  Requiescant in pace.

Tragedy Reveals Unbelievable Beauty - Two Students Die at Canadian Catholic College

Introduction: "If anyone was prepared to die, it was these two"

BARRY'S BAY, ON, February 6, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Lent began a few days early at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy (OLSWA), a Catholic college in Barry's Bay Ontario, renowned as one of the most faithful Catholic colleges in the nation.  Two students drowned in a tragic accident after a minivan they were traveling in on a frozen lake broke through the ice. The two who died were the founder and the most enthusiastic supporters of the newly established pro-life club at the college.

Second Anniversary Memorial

February 2, 2010, the Feast of the Presentation, marked the second anniversary of the deaths of OLSWA students Paul Sanders and Janine Lieu.  The Third-Year class, Paul and Janine's classmates, organized the commemoration services which included a slide show presentation, prayer service and candlelight vigil, and memorial Mass.

Classmate Cassie Farrell offers the following reflection:

In the fall of 2007, a group of young people from across Canada, the U.S.A., and England came together in Barry’s Bay, Ontario, to form the new first year class at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy. At this point in time, these young people had no idea what challenges they would face together, or the strong friendships that they would forge. They could not have imagined the type of impact they would make on each other’s lives. With each passing day, the first years only grew closer, and while there were some odd characters in the mix, each person played an integral role in the dynamic of the entire class. Paul Sanders and Janine Lieu were two of these young people.
