Position Opening

Position:   Academic Dean

Institution:   Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy
Location:   Barry’s Bay, Ontario, Canada
Reports to: President
Supervises: Academic Dept. Heads, Faculty, Registrar, Librarian, Computer Officer, Admissions

Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy (OLSWA) is a private institution for post-secondary education in the Catholic liberal arts tradition. Founded in 2000, OLSWA currently offers one-, two-, and three-year certificates in Christian Humanities, and is pursuing four-year degree-granting status with the Province of Ontario. Two defining characteristics of OLSWA are its Catholic orthodoxy and its commitment to providing excellent, comprehensive liberal arts formation, with courses in Theology, Philosophy, Literature, History, Social Sciences, Languages, Fine Arts, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences.

The Academy has grown steadily from a handful of earnest students and professors in 2000, to about 60 full-time students at present (82 total).  Our business plan envisions doubling to about 120 full-time students (150 total) by Fall 2011.  An outstanding faculty, our first full-time President, and newly acquired facilities stand ready to support the leadership of our next Academic Dean.

OLSWA is nestled in the scenic Ottawa Valley, surrounded by forests and lakes, in an environment that is invigorating, clean, and strikingly beautiful.  The main campus is housed in and around the historic St. Hedwig Parish, in a lumber region settled largely by Polish Catholics.  The internationally-known Madonna House is 15 minutes away.

Duties

The Academic Dean will be a proven scholar and dynamic leader who will guide the school’s academic programs and personnel confidently and collaboratively through the process of becoming a four-year degree-granting college.  A strong candidate might also be hired with the duties and title of “Vice President and Academic Dean,” in which case the VP duties would include areas delegated outside of the immediate academic realms of the college. The Dean will normally teach one, and not more than two 3-credit sections per semester, beginning with a lighter or no teaching load the first semester.

The Academic Dean is charged with the primary responsibility for academic leadership. Broad areas of duties include: 1) directing, overseeing, and evaluating all academic personnel, curricula, programs, and budgets; 2) guiding the establishment and enforcement of all academic policies and procedures; 3) publishing the annual calendar; 4) recommending all academic hires, contract terms, disciplines, and promotions to the President; 5) administering student academic certification, honours, and discipline standards; 6) chairing meetings of the Faculty; 7) serving all faculty committees as an ex officio member; 8) overseeing the admissions process, 9) supporting the President in all other areas so delegated, including the President’s role as Chairman of the Academic Senate; and 10) serving as a voting member of the Board of Directors and its committees.

Qualifications

Education:  An earned doctorate from an accredited university in one of the following areas: Classics, Literature, History, Philosophy, Social Sciences, or Theology.

Professional Experience:  Must demonstrate a pattern of increasing responsibility and successful experience in both university-level teaching and administration. Must be an informed and articulate spokesperson for authentic integral human formation within the Catholic liberal arts tradition.

Candidate must have an integrated understanding of, and commitment to the principles and norms of Ex Corde Ecclesiae and other magisterial documents relevant to the mission, content, and methods of Catholic undergraduate education. Requires a mature grasp of the deposit of faith as summarized in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Candidate will demonstrate a record of superior collaborative leadership skills, creativity, flexibility, energy, and enthusiasm.  Must have excellent habits in the areas of: interpersonal and public relations; oral and written communication; scholarly research; teaching; good humour; managing personnel, programs, and budgets; efficient organization; and attending to both detail and the big picture.

Preferred candidates will also bring several of the following characteristics: Prior teaching and administrative experience at a Catholic institute of higher education explicitly dedicated to Ex Corde Ecclesiae, at least a Master’s degree and teaching competency in two or more of our departments, Canadian citizenship for self or spouse, a record of, or realistic promise for published research, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, experience with academic management software, and familiarity with the basic principles and emerging technologies of librarianship, electronic media, and research methods.

Review of initial nominations and applications is underway. Position is open until filled. Start date: July 1, 2008, or as negotiated.  An initial two- or four-year renewable contract. Direct preliminary inquiries to the President, Dr. David B. Warner (by phone, or:
dwarner@seatofwisdom.org).  A search committee of seven members represents all major stakeholders of the Academy.

A complete application package comprises an updated CV, plus initial screening copies sent by either the applicant or a third party consisting of: 1) a letter of intent addressing the major points of the Dean’s duties and qualifications listed herein, and including a salary history and expectation statement, 2) three letters of recommendation, 3) complete contact information for five referees total, 4) copies of all post-secondary transcripts, and 5) a sample course syllabus corresponding to one or more of the Academy’s courses.  To expedite communication and submission of materials, we request all materials to be submitted through the E-mail address below as file attachments (including scanned images) that are readable within the MS Word Office Suite (saved in 2003 edition or earlier).
