January 24, 2008 marked the opening night of the Academy’s latest theatrical production, Molière’s full-length, hilarious comedy, The Learned Ladies.

Who ever said the classics were dull? Set in France in 1672, The Learned Ladies is one of Molière’s witty, intelligent mockeries of human vices, vanities and follies, set against the backdrop of decadence and outrageous fashion. Staged by our Don Bosco Drama Club, this satire absolutely delighted the senses while bringing this classic comedy to life. Using minimalist sets, and embellished by true-to-the-time-period silk costumes, this play impressed audiences of all ages.

Marked by Molière’s clever use of exaggerated passions and good-humoured raillery, The Learned Ladies is a story about two young sweethearts, who, in order to marry, must overcome the attitude of the maiden’s family. Her sensible father and uncle are in favour of the marriage; but unfortunately her father is under the thumb of his wife, who has a ‘terrible disposition’ and ‘a diabolical temper’. Supported by the young girl’s zany, deluded aunt and cynical sister, the mother wishes her to marry Trissotin, a dilittante and mediocre poet at best, who has these three older women completely in his thrall. For these three ladies are ‘learned’: they challenge the wisdom of Plato himself, and their obsession in life is learning and culture of the most pretentious kind. All ends well, however, after many plot twists and turns, as poets duel, the inflated passions rise, false learning is cast down, the sweethearts are united, and finally harmony reigns supreme.

Skillfully directed by Mrs. Jenny Hayden Baklinski, with the assistance of her brother Michael, the actors were wonderfully flamboyant, and fittingly ‘over the top’ as they interpreted their roles with flair and panache.  The creative costume mistresses worked miracles with their dyeing and stitching, and the make-up and coiffure artists, who designed ‘big hair’, made the era come alive. And of course, the lighting crew and stagehands, often unsung, made the whole production possible.  Merci à tous.

As one can imagine, this satire was well-suited to our scholarly Seat of Wisdom Academians. We look forward to the next production mounted by all our talented Don Bosco artistes.
