Pilgrimage to St. Mary's, Wilno |
|
Despite the cold and a heavy downfall of steady rain, the majority of the student body came out on the afternoon of October 14th to participate in OLSWA’s annual walking pilgrimage to Wilno, ON. Sixty-six enthusiastic pilgrims made the hike, which departed from St. Joseph’s on campus and arrived about three hours later at St. Mary’s Catholic Church – the oldest Polish Catholic Church in Canada. Along the way, pilgrims prayed, chatted, sang, soaked in the beautiful fall colours, and soaked in the rain as well, as they waded through a great number of puddles. Upon reaching their destination, everybody paused to pray inside the beautifully ornamented church, and then ended the day by making their way to the nearby home of Mr. and Mrs. Zakrzewski, who welcomed everyone into their house to dry off and warm up with a hot mug of cider, a delicious dinner, and plenty of pie. First year student Alex Novakowski found the pilgrimage to be a great experience. “Despite the rain,” she says, “I actually really enjoyed it. The rain was almost purifying in a way. It was kind of like struggling through hardship to reach the summit.”
