From the OLSWA Librarian Recent Donors
On behalf of the Dean and Faculty, I would like to warmly thank some recent donors to our library: Mr. and Mrs. David Dooley, The Thomas C. Assaly Charitable Foundation, Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, and the Milan Family, as well as many, many others who have contributed in the past. You are making us a centre of learning!
Dear Friends,
My life is books. My life has always been books. They have always been pivotal in my own journey to the Lord. My life is about teaching and learning. That is why, in addition to my duties as a professor of theology, I love being the Academy Librarian.
Over my time overseeing the library I have realized that a library at a Catholic Liberal Arts school should do two things:
1) Promote the liberal arts, especially by assisting our students’ efforts to grow in knowledge. This means that we must make available all those works of excellence both from within and from outside of the Catholic tradition.
2) Preserve and pass on the Catholic tradition. In this case we are not only concerned with including in our holding works that are themselves intellectual masterpieces, but also books of a more familiar, yet uniquely Catholic, brand. Our many lives of the saints and works from the Catholic spiritual tradition give witness to this part of our commitment.
However, we still need to grow in order to truly fulfil our commitment to excellence in Catholic higher education.
You can help. So many of our books have been donated. We know there are treasures out there, treasures, perhaps, that you have on your shelves and from which a new generation of Catholics could draw benefit. You might also think of buying a book and donating it to OLSWA. This would be a truly effective way of supporting our mission. Below is a list of subject areas that definitely require expansion in our library:
History – all fields of World History: especially Ancient, but Medieval and Modern as well! Histories of China and of India would be welcome.
Philosophy / Theology – We have a good collection of works by and about St. Thomas Aquinas. These could be nicely supplemented by the works of other scholastics like St. Bonaventure, Duns Scotus, St. Anselm, etc. Also,
· The works of the Ancient Greek and Roman philosophers.
· The Fathers of the Church.
· Modern theologians: John Henry Newman, De Lubac, Von Balthasar, etc.

If you wanted to donate a book in memory of a loved one, we would be more than happy to attach one of these memorial forms to the inside cover with your name and the person in whose memory you are donating the book: Christ is the Wisdom of God. Pray that our students will form a deeper attachment to Him. Pray for our Apostolate of the mind, that our little bit will help to return all things to Christ. This preparation is no simple matter. For our students to make a difference in today’s secularizing world, they have to have all the knowledge sufficient for them to become leaders. In the classroom they deal with complex issues. They need to think deeply so as to out-class their peers. They must learn from the greats of the past and the present to become great, and, thus, we need to make available to them all the best thinking in the world.
Yours truly,
Colin Kerr, Ph.D.
