Crossroads Team Arrives in Barry's Bay
Wednesday, 03 August 2011 18:21

On July 26, residents of Barry’s Bay enjoyed the familiar sight of Academy students, but in unfamiliar form: rather than being clad in their typical class attire, these students were dressed in matching shirts emblazoned with the simple but outspoken message, “PRO-LIFE.” These brave young people are members of the Canadian Crossroads team, who had come a long way since the graduation ceremony in town a mere three months ago.

Since then, the group has collectively walked more than 4000 km across the country, and endured the many hardships that come with such a mission: angry motorists, the blazing sun, sore feet, and the daunting night walk.  Needless to say, the arrival back in the haven of Barry’s Bay was a welcome homecoming for the entire team.

The day began in Whitney, Ontario, a small town near the East Gate of Algonquin Park, and located about 50 km west of Barry’s Bay. At about 10:30 AM, five guest-walkers from the Academy, and one walker from the Madonna House community, arrived in Whitney to meet up with the group. After a commencing prayer, the feet started moving east. The group split into two and adopted a “leapfrog” method, in which each individual team walked alternating five-kilometre stints. Arriving in Barry’s Bay around 6:00 PM, the team was met by several local families who joined in for the last kilometre of the walk. While the reaction from passerbys was largely nonresponsive, those who did react were almost always supportive.

Upon arriving in Barry’s Bay, the group was treated to a delicious community barbeque hosted by the Academy, where 60-70 friends and supporters from the surrounding area showed up to greet the team. After spending the night in Academy dorms, the team departed the following morning to continue their walk towards their final destination, Ottawa, with stops in Toronto and Montreal on the way. The team plans to complete the walk in Ottawa on August 12, in time for their planned rally the following day on Parliament Hill.

The Crossroads team has enjoyed a great deal of publicity throughout their walk. Earlier this summer, team leader and OLSWA alumnus Michael Hayden was featured on a BC radio program (RoadKillRadio), in which he explained the Crossroads mission and experience. Listen to it by clicking here.

More recently, LifeSiteNews has given the group extensive coverage, with two feature articles and a candid YouTube video from their stop in Toronto. These can be found below.
