Our Library Within Our Catholic Liberal Arts Mission |
|

Dear Friends,
Overseeing the library has taught me that a library at a Catholic Liberal Arts school should do two things:
1) Promote the liberal arts, especially by assisting our students’ efforts to grow in knowledge. This means that we must make available all those works of excellence both from within and from outside of the Catholic tradition.
2) Preserve and pass on the Catholic tradition. In this case we are not only concerned with including in our holding works that are themselves intellectual masterpieces, but also books of a more familiar, yet uniquely Catholic, brand. Our many lives of the saints and works from the Catholic spiritual tradition give witness to this part of our commitment.
However, we still need to grow in several areas in order to truly fulfil our commitment to excellence in Catholic higher education.
You can help. So many of our books have been donated. We know there are treasures out there, treasures, perhaps, that you have on your shelves and from which a new generation of Catholics could draw benefit. You might also think of buying a book and donating it to OLSWA. This would be a truly effective way of supporting our mission. Below is a list of subject areas that definitely require expansion in our library:
History – all fields of World History, especially Ancient, but Medieval and Modern as well! Histories of China and of India would be welcome.
Philosophy/Theology – We have a good collection of works by and about St. Thomas Aquinas. These could be nicely supplemented by the works of other scholastics like St. Bonaventure, Duns Scotus, St. Anselm, etc. Also:
· The works of the Ancient Greek and Roman philosophers.
· The Fathers of the Church.
· Modern theologians: John Henry Newman, De Lubac, Von Balthasar, etc.
If you wanted to donate a specific book and needed help choosing one, please

Here are some of my suggestions. Any and all of these books would be a great addition to our library:
John Henry Newman, Letters and Diaries, 32 volumes
Peter Lombard, Sentences, translated by Guilio Silano,
Volume 1: The Mystery of the Trinity
Volume 2: On Creation
Volume 3: Incarnation of the Word
Volume 4: On the Doctrine of Signs
Karl Rahner, Theological Investigations, 23 volumes.
Any of the many very good volumes to be found in the Oxford Companion and Cambridge Companion Series.
In Memory of a Loved One
If you wanted to donate a book in memory of a loved one, we would be more than happy to attach one of these memorial forms to the inside cover with your name and the person in whose memory you are donating the book:
I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank all of you who have contributed to our library. Your generosity is making this important intellectual apostolate possible.
Yours truly,
Colin Kerr, Ph.D.
