Concentration Requirements

The completion of the Certificate of Christian Humanities requires the completion of one of the following concentrations: History, Literature, Philosophy, or Theology.

CONCENTRATION REQUIREMENTS

The completion of the Certificate of Christian Humanities requires the completion of one of the following concentrations: History, Literature, Philosophy, or Theology.

History

History

In addition to Western Civilization (HIS 101) or Introduction to Church History (HIS 131), Classical History (HIS 132), North American Civilization (HIS 240), and Biblical History (HIS/THE 310), students must complete four classes from the following choices.

One must be from category A, one from category B, and two electives may be chosen from either. One of the four must be chosen from the Non-Western (NW) classes.

A: Ancient and Medieval History
Medieval History (HIS 220)
Byzantine History (HIS 350) (NW)
Ancient and Medieval Asian Civilization (HIS 365) (NW)

B: Early Modern and Modern History
The Renaissance and Reformation (HIS 230)
The French Revolution and Nineteenth-Century Europe (HIS 336)
History of the Middle East (HIS 360) (NW)

Total Credits in History: 27

Literature

Literature

In addition to Freshman Writing (LIT 100), Classical Literature (LIT 141), Survey of Literature (LIT 201), Shakespeare (LIT 322), and Literary Theory to 1900 (LIT 371), students must complete one course in each of the following areas:

A: Medieval: Medieval Literature (LIT 320), Dante (LIT 351)
B: 18th and 19th C.: Restoration and 18th c. (LIT 325), Romanticism (LIT 326), American Lit – Pilgrims to 1900 (LIT 310), Victorian Lit (LIT 327), Dostoevsky (LIT 340)
C: Modern Literature: Catholic Literature (LIT 251), Canadian (LIT 301), 20th c. American (LIT 311), Modern British (LIT 329), Chesterton (LIT 255)

Total number of credits in English: 27

Church Music

Church Music

Admission Requirements:  Students who wish to be admitted to the music concentration must present themselves for an audition. Auditions normally are held in September and April. To be admitted to the concentration, students must achieve a minimum of Grade 4 (or equivalent) in voice or instrument, and secure the written approval  of the Director of the Music Program. A copy of this written approval is to be deposited in the student‘s academic record.
 
Concentration Requirements:   In addition to LAS 090 (Chorus), students must complete the following requirements: Introduction to  Ecclesiastical Music (3 credits), Schola (1
credit), Introduction to Music History (3 credits), Liturgical Theology (3 credits) , Voice or Instrument (1.5 credits), An additional Voice or Instrument course (1.5 credits) OR another two (2) credits in Music Three (3) additional credits of Music at the 200 level or above.

If a student qualifies out of a course with the instructor‘s permission, an equivalent number of elective credits in Music must be taken.

Students must attain a minimum of Grade 4 piano  and a minimum of Grade 6 in an instrument, which may be piano, and knowledge of music theory to the level of Royal Conservatory Rudiments of Music Theory.

Philosophy

Philosophy

Core requirements: Fundamentals of Philosophy (PHI 100), and Ethics (PHI 200) OR Introduction to Philosophy (PHI 101); Logic (PHI 141); Thomistic Thought (PHI 271/THE 271); Modern Philosophy (PHI 303).

Concentration Requirements: Metaphysics (PHI 325), History of Philosophy Elective (3 credits), Two Additional Philosophy Electives (6 credits).

Total number of credits in Philosophy: 30

Theology

Theology

Core requirements: Christian Doctrine (THE 200), Introduction to Biblical Literature (THE 210), Thomistic Thought (THE 271), Biblical History (THE 310), and Magisterial Thought (THE 245).

Concentration requirements: Metaphysics (PHI 325), The Trinity (THE 343) or Christology (THE 345), Patristics (THE 331) or Vatican II (THE 339), and six additional credits of theology at the 300 level or above.

Total number of credits in Theology: 33 (+ 3 in Philosophy)
